Sapindus mukorossi
Wondering whether any of have you have come across the venerable soapnut tree, sapindus mukorossi. Soapnuts, or soapods, are generally marketed as an eco-friendly, human-friendly alternative to washing powder, but have a multitude of other soapy uses, from just plain soap to wash hands, to general floor cleaning, to hair cleaning, etc. etc. In Europe, a few health food shops sell them, and ebay.co.uk has a few sellers, but I've seen a lot less on ebay.com. We bought some a couple of weeks ago and have been using them to wash all of our clothes (including our daughter's nappies, if they can cope with that, anything goes!), and they are great - we'd been buying ecover washing powder, which costs about $15 per small box, while the cash equivalent amount of soapnut will last perhaps 10 times as long.
